Families often play a central role in both substance abuse behavior and recovery from that abuse. Dysfunctional family dynamics can sometimes lead individuals into the downward spiral of addiction as they seek refuge from the trauma of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Conversely, families can provide support that helps substance abusers seek treatment and avoid the temptation of relapse. Oftentimes the impact of family dynamics is more mixed and complex, but whatever the specific issues at play, families often play a critical role in an individual’s relationship to substance abuse and recovery. To aid in the recovery process, our Lake Worth drug rehab offers support for families of addicts through our Family Program.
Importance of Support Groups for Families of Addicts
At Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches, we know that the effects of drug addiction on families can be devastating, and it is often not just the addict who needs to heal. Family members can be left feeling hopeless and substance abuse can cause strains in the relationship.
Addiction is a family disease, and our Family Program offers support for families of addicts in the way of education and guidance concerning their role in the individual’s recovery. When loved ones of the addict take the time to learn about addiction and their part, the family can move forward together and begin the healing process.
Benefits of Our Meetings for Families of Addicts
At our Lake Worth, Florida, drug rehab, we understand that each family situation is unique and make sure to tailor the involvement of family members in a way that is appropriate for each individual in recovery. Participants of our support groups for families of addicts engage in group discussions, classes, and individual meetings.
Loved ones who participate will learn about:
- Addiction as a disease
- Substance abuse education
- The addiction treatment process
- Healthy communication practices and expressing their emotions
- Familial roles and dynamics in addiction
- What to expect when a loved one is in treatment
- Setting boundaries and detachment
- How to stop being codependent
- Self-care and coping skills
- How to help an addicted loved one during recovery
- Relapse prevention
- Healing together and moving forward
We also take special care to help start the process of repairing the family relationships that have often been strained or even shattered by the painful journey of substance abuse. This can be a critical element in the potential for the long-term success of former substance abusers, and we make every effort to start this process of healing on the right foot during treatment.
Sometimes these pieces cannot be completely put back together, but we help recovering addicts build their new relationships on a solid foundation that rests on an understanding of how substance abuse can be a toxic ingredient for entire families, not just the addicted individual. By coming together and working through the struggles with a therapist, the entire family unit can come out of treatment stronger than ever.
Family Addiction Education Groups
We also offer family addiction education and support groups for families and partners of current and former patients. This group helps families gain valuable knowledge and insight regarding their loved one’s post-treatment needs and the family’s role in their loved one’s recovery.
In addition to educating families about addiction and the importance of family involvement, the family addiction education and support group allow patients to exchange ideas about how to live with a recovering addict and what to do after they complete treatment. Family members learn not only how to help a loved one who struggles with addiction, but also the importance of helping themselves.
As they begin to focus on bettering their own lives for the sake of both themselves and their addicted loved ones, their efforts toward self-care will inspire and empower the entire family unit. Our group is open to loved ones of active drug or alcohol abusers, sober recovery patients, and patients currently in treatment.
Group meetings are held each Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on our new, centralized campus located at:
7859 Lake Worth Rd.
Lake Worth, FL 33467.
