New York City, NY — After realizing that both her 18-year old and 22-year old daughters had become addicted to the prescription painkiller OxyContin, another mother joined the ranks of an increasingly large group of concerned parents confronting the epidemic of prescription drug abuse in the United States. She knew her children needed help to break free from the cycle of prescription drug abuse, but she wasn’t sure where to turn. Fortunately, Anderson Cooper and Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches (BHOPB) were there to help.
Hosting his new daytime talk show, “Anderson,” Mr. Cooper brought the family together with BHOPB Recovery Coach (and successful client) Randy Grimes to persuade the sisters that residential drug detox and treatment could help them turn their lives around. As the audience became involved in the discussion, it became clear that the problem of prescription drug abuse was incredibly widespread, as a number of audience members shared their own personal and family stories.
After hearing about Randy Grimes’ personal battle with and successful recovery from years of painkiller abuse (stemming from injuries sustained during his years in the NFL), both of these sisters agreed to pursue treatment at Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches’ South Florida facility. How their personal stories play out is anyone’s guess (as recovery from drug and alcohol addiction often has many false starts and relapses) but these young women have made the first step on that journey.
