What Does Couples Behavioral Therapy Involve?

Our couples therapy program is ideal for couples in which both parties are suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. We have developed quality and effective gender-specific programs that offer both parties the treatment and care they need. Husbands or boyfriends are treated in our men’s program while wives and girlfriends get help in our women-only facility. In addition to rebuilding their individual lives and taking the necessary steps to become balanced, independent and functional people, they will have the opportunity to repair their relationships through weekly couples therapy sessions, where:

  • The therapist asks about any substance abuse-related incidents since their last session
  • Couples discuss their continued cooperation with the pre-established terms of recovery
  • Therapists assign regular homework assignments meant to build on the material covered at sessions
  • The couple and therapist examine the couple’s completed homework assignment from their last session
  • The couple and therapist discuss any new or re-emerging relationship problems since their last session

Our therapists stay in consistent communication with our couples patients during their treatment, and arrange therapy sessions whenever they feel it is appropriate or beneficial. Couples therapy is offered as part of a broader, comprehensive course of treatment, and is most effective when both parties are honest with each other and stay committed to their recovery.

Creating Harmony and Restoring Function to Relationships

The impact of addiction is felt more within the romantic relationship than perhaps any other, particularly when both parties are battling drugs and alcohol. If not properly addressed and managed, addiction will quickly erode any trust and intimacy that has been built up in the relationship.

Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches is mindful of the vital role that significant others play in the recovery process and of the importance of repairing relationships so that patients can continue their healing with the support of those closest to them. Our couples therapy program helps patients and their significant others identify and address the key issues that have caused their relationship to deteriorate, whether they’re related to addiction or another deep-rooted issue.

Couples Therapy and Codependency

Codependency is a particularly common issue in couples therapy. It can damage the relationship as well as the individual health of the two parties. Although Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches offers a separate program for codependency treatment, couples therapy can help uncover the codependent or enabling tendencies within a relationship. Depending on the level of codependency that the therapist feels is present, they may treat couples on their own or recommend specialized care in our designated codependency treatment option.

Don’t let addiction ruin your relationship to those that are dear to you. Call (888) 432-2467 to learn more about what our couples therapy can do to maintain the harmony between you and your loved one.
