Infographic: Mixing Steroids and Opioids

Drawing upon research reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, this infographic highlights the growing problem of individuals mixing steroids and opioids. The first graphic illustrates how an individual opioid treatment facility went from seeing almost no prior steroid use among their clients in 1990, compared to 1999 data that showed that 9.3% of their clients had used steroids prior to their admittance. The data further suggests that steroid use can often lead to later opioid abuse by examining the average age of first use of each drug respectively and the self-reported data of bodybuilders on how and why they began using opioids. This data makes a strong case that steroid use can often become a gateway drug, leading to later opioid addiction.
