Infographic: Florida A State of Recovery

This infographic makes the argument that prescription drug abuse, specifically addiction to opioid painkillers, became rampant in Florida due to an explosion of “pain pill mills” in the early years of the new millennium. This phenomenon is illustrated in the infographic with the shocking statistic that Florida was home to 98 out of the top 100 oxycodone-prescribing  US physicians based upon quantity of drug prescribed. This led to over 2,500 drug overdose deaths in Florida from 2010-2012. After a subsequent crackdown on prescribing rules and practices, this infographic relates that Florida’s “high-volume oxycodone dispensers” declined from 98 in 2010 to zero in 2013. This dramatically decreased drug overdoses in Florida and led to similar efforts in many other states facing the same problem.
