This infographic examines the issue of substance abuse among first responders. Drawing from data compiled by the US Firefighters Association, the American Psychological Association, and the US National Library of Medicine – this infographic highlights the higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse experienced by police, firefighters, and EMTs. In addition, it illustrates the link between on-the-job stress and substance abuse, coupled with a “macho” culture that makes seeking treatment more difficult than with many other occupations.
