Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches Nurse Practitioner, Julija Joy has recently returned from Long Beach, New York, where she – and about 40 other medical responders from the Florida-5 Disaster Medical Assistance Team – were deployed in mid-November to give medical assistance to super storm Sandy victims.

Julija and her teammates dispensed expert care to a wide range of patients, from those in need of simple tetanus shots to those seriously injured during storm-related home repairs and clean-up. She worked in a portable medical tent and slept on a broken cot in a station with no running water or heat. “What stuck out the most was how grateful people were,” exclaimed Julija, who also seemed to lament that she couldn’t help more.

It was hard because we were giving some comfort to people, but then they had to go home in the cold to no electricity.
