Infographic: Professional Athlete Substance Abuse Treatment

Using information drawn from ongoing sports medicine and psychiatric research, this infographic examines the growing evidence that professional athletes may be predisposed to higher rates of substance abuse than the general population. Some of these tendencies may exhibit themselves during the athlete’s career and some may arise after they have left the sport either due to a desire to recreate the “rush” of competition or to alleviate chronic pain incurred from their past athletic pursuits. In addition to these causes, this infographic illustrates how some professional sports have historically been linked to specific drug abuse such as professional baseball and amphetamines and professional football and prescription pain medication. Taken as a whole, this infographic makes a strong case for offering substance abuse treatment specifically designed for professional athletes.
