Infographic: 26.8 Million American Children are Exposed to Alcoholism in Their Family

This infographic brings together a wide range of research on the negative impact that alcoholism can have on the children and families of alcoholics. This research was conducted and reported by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, and the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. It begins by stating that over 25 million US children are exposed to alcoholism in their family. When combined with the later statistic it presents, that a family history of alcoholism is the #1 indicator of future alcoholism, this statistic becomes even more alarming. The infographic presents two further statistics that illustrate the negative impact of alcohol abuse on families: 48.3% of marriage with alcohol abuse end in divorce and children of alcoholics are 4 times more likely to develop alcoholism. All of this information helps to make the case for alcoholism treatment that works with the entire family, not just the alcoholic alone.
