There are unique considerations when treating First Responders. First Responders include Police Officers, Corrections Officers, Fire Fighters, EMTs, and Flight Attendants. They come from highly stressful occupations
where weakness and avoidance is not an option. They have faced traumatic situations and very likely suffer from PTSD. If they are abusing alcohol and, perhaps especially illegal drugs, they live with conflict. They often communicate among themselves and shut out others and often families. The effect is that their families greatly suffer the impact of addiction. This conference will focus on the Residential Treatment of First Responders and their families. It will go further in addressing the unique issues they and their families face when they come home. Unique issues that will be addressed will include:
• What a recovery program looks like for a First Responder and his/her family
• Addressing communication patterns
• Treating trauma/PTSD
• Co-dependency
• Anger issues
• Building trust
• Continued care for Safety Officers and Families
