KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Dr. Mathieu Guidere - University of Geneva, Switzerland
Dr. Mathieu Guidere is Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and Senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies in Washington DC. As a leading scientist on cognitive linguistics and its applications to defense and security, he was awarded a Fulbright Prize for the "Radicalization Watch Project" (RWP). From 2003 to 2007, he chaired the Strategic Information Analysis Unit at the French Military Academy (Saint-Cyr), where he addressed the applications of mass data processing to supplement intelligence regarding radicalization and ideological indoctrination. He also headed several research projects to develop new counterterrorism strategies based on in-depth analysis of terrorist discourse and data. Since 2007, Dr. Guidere leads a research group on logic, mind and language. He has authored several works including “Al Qaeda Recruitment Manual” (Paris: Seuil), “Iraq in Translation” (Paris: Jacob-Duvernet) and “Multilingual Strategic Monitoring” (Paris: Le Manuscrit).

Dr. Newton Howard - Center for Advanced Defense Studies, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Newton Howard is the director of the Mind Machine Project and a resident scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his Doctoral degree in Cognitive Informatics and Mathematics from University of Paris 1 - La Sorbonne (France) where he was also awarded the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches for his leading work on the Physics of Cognition (PoC) and its applications to complex medical, economical and security equilibriums. While a graduate at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Oxford, England, he proposed the Theory of Intention Awareness (IA). He also held positions as a professor of Mathematics and Psychiatry at The George Washington University, where he established leading academic programs directed to solve real world problems.
Dr. Louis M. French - Walter Reed
Dr. French received his doctorate in clinical psychology, focused on assessment, from the George Washington University. He completed fellowships in clinical and experimental neuropsychology at the National Institute of Mental Health and in neuropsychology, focusing on traumatic brain injury, at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is currently the TBI Service Chief at the hospital and site director for the DVBIC at Walter Reed, where he oversees operations related to the identification and treatment of individuals with traumatic brain injury. He serves or has served on a number of federal or Department of Defense panels on issues in traumatic brain injury, including the Army Surgeon General’s Taskforce on TBI, and is a frequent speaker on issues of traumatic brain injury in the military. He is principal investigator on six studies of TBI in returning Service Members. He is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. John Violanti - University of Buffalo
John M. Violanti, Ph.D. is a research professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), school of Public health and health Professions at the State University of NY Buffalo and a member of the University of Buffalo medical school graduate faculty. He is a police veteran, serving with the New York State Police for 23 years as a trooper, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and later as a coordinator for the Psychological Assistance Program (EAP) for the New York State Police. Recent projects include the Buffalo Cardio Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) study, research of the health and psychological effects of shift work, and police suicide. He is a respected member of the Law Enforcement Wellness Association. Dr. Violanti conducts clinical research on a host of law enforcement health and wellness issues for the University of Buffalo Department of Social Work and Preventative Medicine. In addition to his research, Dr. Violanti has written and edited several books relating to law enforcement stress and trauma including Police Trauma: Psychological Aftermath of Civilian Combat, Posttraumatic Stress Intervention: Challenges, Issues, and Perspectives and “Copicide” : Concepts, Cases, and Controversies of Suicide by Cop. He has been an invited lecturer on topics of police stress and suicide to the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia several times. Prior to his present work with the University of Buffalo, John was a full professor in the Department of criminal justice at the Rochester Institute of technology in Rochester, New York for fifteen years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-66 with the 57th MP Company at USMA, West Point.
Barbara O'Reilly - Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program
Lieutenant Colonel Barb O’Reilly serves as Chief, of Deployment Cycle Support and the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program for the Minnesota National Guard. Her mission is to empower leaders, Servicemembers and families by providing relevant training, services, and resources throughout the deployment cycle. Minnesota led the way in developing the training to help Servicemembers and families transition from Warrior to Citizen. They are now leading the way in establishing a program that can be sustained by communities long after the Servicemembers return home.
