Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches is one of the leading treatment centers for successfully treating and helping those who suffer from depression and have a dual diagnosis / co-occurring disorders.

A co-occurring disorder or Dual Diagnosis is when someone has both a chemical dependency and a diagnosed mood disorder, such as depression. Many people who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse also are clinically depressed. Depression and other mood disorders are very treatable conditions. If necessary, our staff psychiatrist can prescribe the appropriate medication. Medication is merely to help the client maintain emotional stability.

Co-morbid Depression

Depression and other mood disorders combined with any substance abuse addiction results in what is termed today as a "dual diagnosis" or "cooccurring disorders". Many people suffer from clinical depression. One of the most common is Bipolar disorder. Co-occurring disorders are when an individual has a chemical dependency and an emotional or psychiatric illness occurring at the same time. These may include depression (bipolar), anxiety, OCD, personality disorders and other disorders.

Depression is very treatable when it occurs with alcohol or substance abuse. When diagnosed by our multi-phase evaluation process, our staff psychiatrist can prescribe an appropriate medication to maintain a normal condition. Our clinical team is extensively trained to recognize and treat mood disorders, especially depression. Our proven program for depression recovery combines both proper therapy while also addressing key underlying issues that often go overlooked in other treatment programs. Dependency and mood disorders when treated concurrently, statistically have had the highest success for a long term depression recovery.

Undiagnosed or improperly treated depression of any kind can trigger or promote chemical dependency and alcoholism. People who are clinically depressed and do not seek help will often use illegal drugs to self soothe and/or self-medicate their low feelings.

State-of-the-Art Therapy for Depression Recovery

At Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches, our Assessment, Education and Research Department is continuously looking for new ways to contribute to the body of knowledge in the field of substance abuse as well as improve our patients’ treatment experiences during their stay with us. Our philosophy of treating the “whole patient” has been the driving force behind our research in the area of comorbid mood disorders and substance dependence issues.

In that tradition, we have begun research projects designed at looking at how alternative treatment modalities, in keeping with our 12-step based philosophy of treatment, can be used to help our patients get the most out of their treatment experience and start their early recovery process on a solid foundation. Light Sound Neurotherapy, or LSN, is one such intervention that may make a difference in our patients’ journeys into long-term depression recovery.

Neurofeedback, the foundation on which LSN is built, has been used since the 1920’s in treatment of various mental illnesses, and forty years of research has found it to be effective in treatment of frequently seen co-morbid disorders such as ADHD, depression, and anxiety disorders.
