Anger Management
Unfortunately many people suffer from uncontrollable anger and rage problems in today's society. The people who are most effected and hurt are often the loved ones of those with anger management issues. This is because the individual with anger management issues (known as the abuser) feels safest in directing or expressing their anger at those who love them the most (known as the enablers).
They have learned over time that their loved ones won't reject or rebuke them, so there won't be any real consequences that they have to suffer as a result of their inappropriate displays of anger. Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches is one of the leading and most successful treatment centers for personality disorders like anger management when it is co-occurring with another disorder like alcohol or drug abuse. Co-occurring disorders are when someone has both a chemical dependency problem and some other behavioral issue or behavioral disorder, such as anger.
Anger is a basic human emotion that in and of itself when kept in check is not unhealthy. However, for individuals who cannot control their anger, it can become very dangerous and destructive to themselves and those around them. Anger has both physical and psychological components. The physical aspects include an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, adrenaline, and noradrenalin.
Specific individuals seem to have a lower tolerance for frustration that may stem from genetics and/or family experiences. Often times, people who get angry easily were raised in families that were not structured or whose members did not possess good communication skills. Failure to successfully communicate expectations and feelings can lead to angry outbursts of internally directed feelings of anger. There are many possible reasons and explanations as to why someone has developed an anger problem, but whatever the cause, anger management techniques can help everyone.
Anger incidents are usually brought on by specific situations either in the present or by memories of traumatic events from an individual’s past. Although anger that is expressed destructively is a major problem, so is anger that is suppressed or turned inward and communicated as in the case of someone who is passive aggressive. This can lead to a number of physical and psychological problems. Angry, hostile feelings can also often be triggers for substance abuse, making anger management a key component in drug treatment for many individuals.

Learning to successfully manage anger appropriately requires therapy, education, and support. Participants in our anger management program at Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches learn how to cope with internal and external emotional conflict. Our specialized treatment program for anger management combines both in-group and individual counseling which results in our participants acquiring greater self-awareness and the necessary tools to manage their anger in a more constructive and healthy way for both themselves and their loved ones.
