Detox Information
In this context, the term detox refers to the detoxifying of the residual toxins left in the human body as a result of imbibing those chemicals or substances found in drugs and/or alcohol.
Detox, short for detoxification, is the first step in the treatment, rehabilitation for drug and/or alcohol abuse. The reason it is the first step is as long as there is alcohol or drugs in a person's body it causes strong physical craving for more of that substance. The moment a person stops drinking or using any drug, the body then starts the process of detoxifying itself. The detoxification process causes the cells of the body a certain amount of suffering or what is better known as withdrawal symptoms and discomfort. In the extreme case, the human body reacts severely, even violently, as in the case of the delirium tremors (DT’s).
Detoxification from drugs or alcohol can be traumatic to the human body. It needs to be done under medical supervision only. Do not attempt to detox from alcohol or any type of drugs without proper medical, professional assistance.
Over time, drinking alcohol or using drugs can cause physical dependence. Stopping drinking alcohol or using drugs, results in withdrawal from these substances. Detox, withdrawal, without medical supervision and assistance has a high element of risk and can result is severe consequences. The negative consequences from detoxing can include: seizure, nausea, hallucinations, high blood pressure, severe anxiety, etc. Certain drugs are administered during detox to insure physical and mental stability during the process.
